Brazil still underinvested in higher education , OECD assesses

In a group of 29 countries , Brazil ranks 23 th in the ranking of investment in higher education , according to research by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development ( OECD ) released on Tuesday ( 11 ) in Paris , France. The study shows that was invested on average 0.8 % of Gross Domestic Product ( GDP ) at this stage of education . According to the organization , however , Brazil recorded the largest increase in investments in the period 2000-2009 .

The country is " gradually approaching " members of the so-called G20 (group of the richest nations in the world ) . However , the study warns of low investment in education when compared to the Gross Domestic Product ( GDP ) . According to the data , Brazilian investments in education in general reached 5.55% of GDP, while the target for OECD countries is 6.23 % .

The research examined 42 countries , but not all reported data on detailed aspects of the organization , hence the fact that the number of nations analyzed are higher or lower in certain items of the study . Lead the ranking of countries which invest more in education at Australia , Finland , Ireland and Sweden . The study shows that the international economic crisis has not affected the investments in education .

" Well-schooled people are living longer , are more likely to vote and are more favorable to equality of rights of minorities attitudes ," says the OECD study , which can be found on the organization's website.

According to the study , Brazil increased total investment in education , because in 2000 the expenditure on education accounted for 10.5% of the public resources of the country , while in 2009 it rose to 16.8 % . " One of the highest rates " among the 33 countries in which that item was observed , highlights the OECD .

In the period 2000-2009 , investments in higher education fell by 2 % . In parallel , there was an average increase of 67 % of students in universities , 2005-2009 .

Another finding of the research is that enrollment rates in childhood record high , but still below expectations OECD . For the organization , however , the fact that 92 % of children under 6 years are in the classroom should be celebrated , because in 2005 the percentage was 83 % .

The organization reports that more investment in education generate employment opportunities in the labor market . By survey data, 68.7 % of Brazilians without high school got jobs . The occupancy rate rises to 77.4 % for those who have completed secondary education and 85.6 % for professionals with higher education.
