Top quality education puts Brazil in the penultimate position
Top quality education puts Brazil in the penultimate position
Country ranked 39. Place among 40 countries analyzed; crosses index data of cognitive abilities and school performance
Brazil was the penultimate position in a comparative index of educational performance done with data from 40 countries. The rankings, released on Tuesday, 27 by Pearson International, part of the project The Learning Curve (Learning Curve, in English), conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The study measures the results of three tests applied to international students 5. º and 9. Third year of elementary school. Finland and South Korea were the countries best placed. Brazil was just ahead of Indonésa and behind countries such as Bulgaria (30. º), Romania (32. º) and Colombia (36. º).
The global index of cognitive abilities and school performance was created from the intersection of international indicators of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study ( Timms) and evaluations of Progress in International Literacy Study and Reading (PIRLS), as well as educational data for each country on literacy and graduation rates for schools and universities.
The performance of each country shows whether it is above or below the global average calculated from the data of all participants. According to data released on Tuesday, 27 of the 40 countries were above the average, while 13 are below the median value. Those countries still were divided into five groups according to their distance from the average. Brazil, which had scores of -1.65, was included in group 5, which are the seven nations with the largest negative change in the global average.
According Mekler Nunes, CEO of Basic Education Pearson in the country, 39. Place is not all bad. That's because the 40 countries that make up the rankings are unique among the 193 nations have existing historical data and comparable statistics on the quality of education. "Being in this list of countries is already, in itself, a highlight," he says. "It is a sign that we have done the most basic homework."
