Political satire became one of the best known aspects of his poetry .

Gregorio Guerra was the third son of a Portuguese nobleman , established in the Bahian Reconcavo as a planter , and a Brazilian . Unlike older brothers who did not fit the studies and devoted to assisting his father on the farm , Gregory received instruction in childhood and adolescence and was sent to the University of Coimbra, where he graduated in law.

It would have been a judge of the Civil Court , Crime and Orphans in Lisbon for many years . In Portuguese Court , became involved in the literary life that left the Camões Mannerism and the Baroque reached following the Spanish influences of Gongora and Quevedo . On this occasion , I would also married and had access to the king Pedro 2 , who gained sympathy and favors .

His luck , however, abruptly changed . Widowed and fell into disgrace with the king , according to some biographers , by intrigue someone ridiculed in one of his satirical poems . Eventually returned to Bahia in 1681 , initially working for the Archbishop , as Treasurer , but soon disconnected from their duties .

Then married Mary Peoples , to whom he dedicated one of his most famous sonnets . Sold the land he had received from inheritance and reportedly kept the money in a bag in the corner of the house , spending it at will and without economy. At the same time , tried to practice law , legal arguments in writing verses .

At one point , he decided to abandon everything and left the Reconcavo as an itinerant singer , living with the people , attending festivals , feasting whenever asked . It was then that swells your (including erotic - obscene ) satirical work that would earn him the nickname " Boca do Inferno " . But it was the political criticism of corruption and mockery to local nobles that resulted in his deportation to Angola .

From there , he could only return in 1695 , with the proviso settle in Pernambuco and not in Bahia, besides avoiding skits . According to scholars , these final moments of life , became more devout and gave vent to religious poetry , in which he asks God for forgiveness for their sins . Died on an unknown date in the following year .

Remember that the reputation of Gregorio - one of the great Baroque poets not only in Brazil , but the Portuguese language - is due to a solid work effectively , in which the author learned to handle the canons of the time , is an erudite way into poems lyrical philosophical and religious, nature is the work of folksy satirical slant. The stylistic virtuosity Gregorio finds no rival in height Portuguese poetry of the same period.
