Scientist: Joseph Louis Proustbiography
Joseph Louis Proust was born in Angers on 26 September 1754.Filho boticário.Foi Chief of Pharmacy Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris. Was in Spain , where he taught chemistry at the Academy of Artillery of Segovia and Salamanca . Worked on the newly installed lab of Carlos IV in Madrid. In 1816 he was elected to the Academy of Sciences of France , removing then to Angers .
Proust published papers on urine, phosphoric acid and alum . During his stay in Spain , the Spanish Proust studied minerals. In 1806 enunciated the law of definite proportions , a cornerstone of chemical atomism , and received its name. The law is formulated by John Dalton in 1808 , but is the work of Proust that provides empirical evidence that led to its acceptance.
Proust undertook studies resulted in the discovery of a process of extracting grape sugar . Back in France in 1806 . During the continental blockade is invited by Napoleon I to establish a sugar factory in accordance with the procedure invented by him , but refused the offer . Proust also researched the salts of organic acids and is one of the founders of the chemical analysis .
Scientific Contributions
In 1799 , Joseph Louis Proust , based on the reasoning of the Law of Conservation of Mass , established the Law of Definite Proportions (Law of Proust ) , according to which a given chemical compound always contains its elements in the same proportions by mass. According to the Law of Proust , there is a definite relationship between the masses of reactants to form products ratio .
The Law of Proust justifies the rules between three masses used to calculate the amounts of reactants and products, from thence could determine the proximate formula of a substance . With the establishment of the concepts of atomic mass , molecular mass and molar mass ( a consequence of the Law of Proust and Dalton's Law ) we can now use three rules to calculate the amounts of reactants and products , in bulk, quantity of matter and number of molecules and to determine molecular formula of a substance.
The law is reformulated in 1808 by John Dalton , but is the work of Proust which provides empirical evidence to determine its acceptance .
Proust also researched the salts of organic acids . It is one of the founders of the chemical analysis .
