Education is a fundamental human right and is essential to the exercise of all rights. Even so, the world still has approximately 774 million illiterate and about 57 million children out of primary school. Many young people and adults continue without learning what they need to know to manage their lives with health and dignity and that the global learning crisis is costing 129 billion dollars per year.
Affirmations are the 11th Global Monitoring Report on Education for All, released on Wednesday (29) by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Because of a combination of factors - such as poverty, gender inequality, and geographic isolation of the minority situation - the quality of education is a distant dream for many, especially for girls from poor families in rural areas. They are among the children who face the greatest barriers to access to education.
One of the main responsibilities of UNESCO is to defend the right of every girl and boy, and every man and woman young adult, to have quality education throughout life - regardless of setting (formal, non-formal or informal).
Brazil is among the 53 countries that have not reached and are not close to achieving the Goals of Education for All by 2015, despite some significant advances in the field of education over the past two decades.
