Oedipus the King
Oedipus the King
The city of Thebes is suffering from a pestilence leaving their fields and their barren women . Oedipus , King of Thebes , Creon had sent his brother to the temple of Apollo to ask the oracle how to end the plague. Creon returns with good news . The oracle said that the plague will end as soon as the murderer of the previous king, Laius is found . He had also been the former husband of Jocasta before she married Oedipus . Hearing this , Oedipus vows to find the killer and banish Thebes . He asks some questions Creon , wondering where Laius was killed , if there was a witness to the crime and how many men had participated in the murder. Creon replies that Laius had been killed outside the city by a band of robbers , and the only witness was a pastor who still lived near there. Oedipus turns to the chorus ( representing the people of Thebes ) and asks if anyone knows anything more about the king's death . The Chorus suggests that Oedipus consult Teiresias , the blind prophet. Oedipus tells them that had sent for him .
When Tiresias arrives, he seems reluctant to answer the questions of Oedipus, warning him that he will not want to know the answers . Oedipus the threat of death , and finally Teiresias says that Oedipus himself is the murderer , and his marriage is an incestuous union with his mother . Oedipus takes this as an insult and concludes that Creon paid Teiresias to say these things . He also belittles Tiresias saying he was not a true prophet , because it should have been able to solve the riddle of the Sphinx , which only he , Oedipus , succeeded . Teiresias retorts that , although he has no vision, was Oedipus who was blind to the truth . He asks the king to whom he was a child and remember the curse upon the heads of their fathers . He also prophesies that Oedipus will leave Thebes embarrassed . Furious , Oedipus sends him away and Tiresias leaves , repeating that the murderer of Laius was before him, a man who was the murderer of his own father and husband of his mother , and came seeing but leave blind.
Creon enters , asking if it was true that Oedipus falsely accused . The Chorus tries to appease him , but Oedipus enters and accuses him of treason. The men discuss until the arrival of Jocasta , wife of Oedipus . They explain the reason for their discussion to Jocasta who begs Oedipus to believe Creon . The Choir also begs Oedipus to be more tolerant , and he gives grudgingly , leaving Creon from . Jocasta asks Oedipus why he was so angry , and he tells the prophecy of Tiresias . Jocasta calms him down , saying that the oracles and prophets are liars , and that can prove this with a personal example . Long ago, an oracle told Laius that his son would kill him . To avoid this misfortune , he and Jocasta had given his little son for a pastor , with orders to take him to the mountains to die , with a skewer piercing his ankles . However , Laius was killed by robbers , not by his son , proving that the oracle was wrong . But a detail in the story of Oedipus Jocasta upsets . She had said that Laius died in a place where three roads met. This makes Oedipus remembers an incident from his past when he killed a stranger who insulted him in a similar place . He asks Jocasta describes Laius , and her description matches his memory . Jocasta also states that the only witness to the death of Laius swore that he had been killed by five men . Oedipus sends for this witness .
While waiting for the man to arrive , Jocasta asks Oedipus why he looked so upset . Oedipus tells her the story of his past . Once when he was young , a man who said he had found that he was not his father's son . He asked about it to their parents , who had denied the story . However , it disturbed him enough to go to an oracle in search of truth . The oracle had said he would kill his father and marry his mother . It scared him so much that he left his town and never returned . During his travels he had met a pompous man at a crossroads and killed when he offended . Oedipus fears that the man he had killed was Laius . If this is true , Oedipus will be banned forever from Thebes ( for that was the punishment he had sworn to give the murderer of Laius ) and Corinth , his hometown (because he feared that the prophecy of the oracle to take place ) . If this witness swear that robbers killed Laius , then Oedipus will be free , and he prays that this is what happens . Oedipus and Jocasta enter the palace to wait for the witness.
Jocasta leaves the palace and goes to the temple , where she will pray for Oedipus . A messenger arrives from Corinth with the news that Polybius , father of Oedipus , is dead . Radiant Jocasta sends for Oedipus , glad to have another proof of the uselessness of the oracles . Oedipus rejoices , but still says it fears that part of the prophecy that said he would marry his mother. The messenger assures him that he need not fear approaching Corinth , once Merope , wife of Polybius , is not his real mother , and the same applies to Polybius . Shaken , Oedipus asks how he knows that. The messenger replied that , years ago , a man had a baby to him , and he surrendered to the king and queen of Corinth , and this baby was Oedipus himself . The weakness of the ankles Oedipus is a proof of its history , because the baby's feet had been drilled through the ankles . Oedipus asks the messenger whom he had given the baby and the man replied that he had been a servant of Laius . The king sends his soldiers they find this man . The messenger suggests that Jocasta should be able to help identify it . Suddenly , Jocasta realizes the horrible truth and begs Oedipus that he suspend the investigations . Oedipus replies that he had vowed to unravel the mystery , and he will. Jocasta runs into the palace, giving a final goodbye to Oedipus .
Again , Oedipus swears he will discover this secret , no matter how vile is the answer. It assumes that Jocasta is ashamed of his humble origin likely . The chorus feels that something bad will happen. Soldiers Oedipus come , bringing an old shepherd , who is afraid to answer the questions of the king . Finally , he tells the truth to Oedipus . He had actually given a baby to the messenger and this baby was the son of Laius , the same as Jocasta and Laius had left to die on the mountain because of the prophecy of the oracle .
Finally the truth is revealed and Oedipus runs through the palace , screaming in despair. He picks up a sword and searches for Jocasta , wanting to kill her . But when Oedipus enters the Queen's room, he discovers that she had hanged herself . He takes the gold brooches with which she had fastened her dress and sticks his own eyes . He leaves the palace again , with blood streaming from his empty eyes . Oedipus screams that he, who had seen so many vile things , see right now ever again. It begs the Chorus to kill him . Creon enters, having heard the whole story and asks Oedipus to between where it can not be seen . Oedipus begs him to be allowed him to leave town , but Creon says Apolo need to consult first. Oedipus says that the punishment he had declared for the murderer of Laius was banishment , and Creon agrees . Before leaving , however , Oedipus says goodbye daughters and asks Creon to look after them . So Oedipus and Creon is taken away and the girls enter the palace again . The Chorus , alone, laments the sad story of Oedipus , the greatest of men , and who fell so low.
