Herbert Jose de Souza
Born November 3, 1935 , in the city of Bocaiúva in Minas Gerais , Herbert Jose de Souza , popularly known as Valek was a man of great activity in social work in Brazil .
Degree in Sociology and Public Policy Administration from the University of Minas Gerais , raised the banner of social transformation , facing the direction of union and congregation.
Helped form the Popular Action ( AP ) , a movement which sought the establishment of socialism in Brazil .
After the military coup of 1964 , exerted great struggle against the dictatorship , working in organizations to combat deployed political regime , for which he was exiled , going live in several countries such as Chile , Canada and Mexico . Only in 1979 could return to Brazil .
One of his major projects was the creation of IBASE ( Brazilian Institute of Social and Economic Analyses ) , governmental character, which aims to analyze the social, economic and political realities of the country .
In 1993 he founded Citizen Action , a program of struggle for life and against poverty , fighting hunger and unemployment through the democratization of land .
Valek was a carrier of hemophilia, a disease transmitted genetically , which presents disability in blood clotting , may cause severe bleeding .
Consequently the disease , Herbert de Souza had blood transfusions constantly being affected by the acquisition of HIV ( Human Immunodeficiency Virus ) , human immunodeficiency virus , AIDS virus . Two of his brothers died from contracting HIV, Henfil cartoonist , aged 43 , and musician Chico Mario , aged 39 .
Even with health problems , sociologist never ceased to exercise their citizenship , pointing to the interests of the poor . His tireless struggle walked towards human rights and ideals of solidarity in order to make society fairer .
With a beautiful story of life, fighting for the rights of others, at 61 years old your body no longer corresponded to the hemophilia and AIDS treatments . On August 9, 1997 , Valek died in Rio de Janeiro , having his body cremated at will.
Brazil has lost a great citizen, a good man who changed the history of the country for their social work .
